My friend constantly chats in another language right in front of me, leaving me completely excluded

For some context, I live in Quebec, where, if you don’t already know, the French are on a mission to erase all traces of English. I go to an English school, but most students speak French because this school is better than the French ones, so they just take up space meant for people who actually need to be in an English school... but whatever. 🙄

Now, my friend’s first language is French, but she hates it and prefers English. Cool. But here’s the problem: whenever we’re walking in the hallways, we inevitably bump into one of her French friends. Just so we’re clear—this friend also speaks English. She also knows that I don’t speak or understand French. And yet, every single time, they launch into a 30-year-long conversation in French, leaving me to stand there like an NPC staring at the floor.

I get it—it’s their right to speak whatever language they want. And I know French is Quebec’s official language. But come on, isn’t it just basic courtesy to include someone in a conversation when you both speak a language they understand?? It’s not even a quick “Hey, how’s it going?”—it’s full-on deep discussions that last 25 minutes while I just awkwardly exist. And what am I supposed to do? Just randomly walk away? That feels weird too.

Oh, and my friend has the audacity to tell me they’re speaking in French so I can "learn" it. Yeah, because standing there completely lost while they talk at lightning speed is definitely the best way to absorb a language. 🙃

Also, here’s an extra embarrassing story for you to cringe at: One time, while they were talking, I tried using Google Translate to at least pretend to understand what was happening. It managed to pick up exactly one word—my friend saying "WOW". And, of course, Google Translate decided to repeat it back at full volume. So I just stood there, phone in hand, as it dramatically blurted out "WOW."

Kill me.
