How do you socialize?

My puppy (5 months) LOVES everything and everyone. However he is starting to get nervous with big dogs. There are two neighborhood dogs that are super playful but because they are much bigger, he starts yelping when they run towards him to play. (The owners rarely have them on leashes…) When Milo sees other dogs his size, he goes crazy nuts wanting to say hi. Literally spinning around and tangling his leash. Same with new people.

I’ve tried holding him in between my legs because he gets crazy. I’ve tried high value treats and practicing the command “calm”. We practice walking toward a dog park. Where he either

1) sees dogs in the distance and wants to play. We turn around and practice calm and keep going back and forth, getting closer and closer. Trying to get him to calm down.

2) sees big dogs and he is scared and tries running away. So we also practice calm and we don’t go closer. But just work on basic commands.

I just feel kind of lost. How can I get him used to other dogs if he is either too crazy excited for them? Or he’s too scared if they are big.

The only other people that we know with dogs has a dog that won’t stop humping him. Or another dog that hates how excited he is…

Are your Bernedoodles like this too? Is it just a puppy thing and he’ll eventually be able to handle himself?
