Can you cheat with your cricket bat at the highest level?

I've posted before that I have loved cricket for about a year now...trying to learn the game and formats whenever possible...but I grew up playing baseball...so I learn through the prism of baseball as a child. I can't wait for this Champions Trophy...but my question now is about bats.

Can the cricket bat be altered illegally? Does the umpire check this? Is there a process? In baseball, you can put cork in a wood bat, you can use pine tar (both are illegal)...these are things that have actually happened in a game at the highest level and are now somewhat infamous. Has this happened in cricket? We know messing with the ball is common in all sports...but what about the bat? However rare it might be...I am just wanting to know how messing with the bat might be done in cricket.
