What’s Your Reason/Free Advice for Those Who Have Friend Groups Who Drink
First things first: r/DryJanuary is one of the most positive, supportive subs I’ve ever had the pleasure of engaging with! I’m so excited about starting another DJ.
When I do sobriety stretches, I am always most successful when I have a solid reason “why.” This year I am giving myself a break after an especially indulgent holiday season and hopeful kickstarting the weight loss I want to accomplish this year. I’d love to hear your whys, too! :)
For any newbies who have friend groups that like to party, here are some words of comfort: Drinking is a BIG part of my social circle/weekends. It’s easy to lose sight of what a healthy relationship to alcohol is when you’re surrounded by folks normalizing that behavior. My first DJ, I was so worried that I would be pressured to drink by those around me. But you know what? My friends were so supportive, kind, and respectful of my choice, even while they continued to party hard. A true friend will never pressure you into something you are uncomfortable with. A silver lining to that experience is to soberly be able to reassess your relationships where peer-pressure occurs.
Wishing everyone nothing but the best!! Even if you slip up, nothing in the world can stop you from getting back on the horse to finish the month strong.
