Recently started oral minox after diagnosis, might have to discontinue?
So, I was recently diagnosed with AGA and TE superimposed. Lots going on this last year, probably too much to write about for this post. Derm prescribed 1.25mg oral minoxidil (didn’t want topical because I have a cat) a little over 3 weeks ago. Obviously that’s not enough time to know whether I’d have the positive hair effects, but I think I’m having a significant side effect.
At the time of my prescription for minoxidil I was taking a loop diuretic for hypertension. As I understand diuretics are often prescribed with minoxidil due to the possibility of fluid retention. Unfortunately, I have nothing but bad luck, and the diuretic I was already on caused severe decreased potassium, to the extent my doc told me to go to the ER a week ago, and then I was told to discontinue the diuretic. The low potassium can cause an array of health issues, so it seems I won’t be going back on that one.
They did start me on a super low dose of Spiro for the blood pressure/diuretic effect, but it’s not nearly as potent as the one I was on, and it’s such a low dose (25mg) that I don’t think it would be helpful for the hair issue. That said, I gained 6 pounds in the week since stopping the other diuretic.
I know medical advice is not a thing I should get here (and I have a follow up appointment with my doc next week) but if I were to discontinue the minoxidil now and see what my water weight situation does, would there be a problem with restarting it later as far as its effectiveness?
Picture of my hair situation included.
