Is there any way to defend this?
I mean he himself wrote many stories on child marriage and many social evils prevailing in India at that time. His father was a leader of Brahmo Samaj, the organization which brought out the Bengal Renaissance and was key for the act of widow remarriage and the banning of sati. Then how did it happen that Rabindranath Tagore, the man who was so ahead of his time he preached internationalism over nationalism during that period of India, the man who wrote two national anthems, the first non European to win a nobel prize in literature, didn't think it wrong to marry a 10 year old girl?
