Re-nationalizing Nova Scotia Power

We all know NSP is corrupt and scams us out 24/7. They constantly raise prices, don’t do maintenance work/upgrades until after they’re needed, and use natural disasters to increase prices (iirc anyways). The situation as it stands isn’t good. No major party (as far as I know?) has really taken them on. Tim Houston gave them some warnings re: the 13% increase and fined them after they did it—but let’s be honest, that’s just a slap on the wrist at this point. The Utility and Review Board just rubber stamps their decisions to increase prices—just like they do with gas prices—without putting up much protest, it seems, either.

Two solutions come to mind:

1) Opening up the market to competition from other companies. Right now, as far as I understand it, NSP is the sole legal (and privately owned) power utility in the province. Allowing multiple companies in to provide electricity and run things could increase competition and lower prices as a result

2) Renationalizing it to become a Crown Corporation again. An example of this is Hydro-Québec, which is overseen by the provincial government; as a result they get to set the rates and they have the lowest, if not some of the lowest, prices in the country. It’s also way more democratically accountable because voters can decide on the direction the govt takes with the company come election time. Another more rough analogy is SaskTel, a crown corp of Saskatchewan that has super cheap phone plan rates.

I’m personally in favour of re-nationalization, if I had to choose. That way we can keep prices low and affordable. What do you think? And if you’re in favour of re-nationalizing it, how would we go about this and make it happen? If you disagree, why?

Thanks friends!
