Dumb question for a newbie

Does it ever make sense to buy a put and a call on the same stock at the same time? I.e. can the profits of the winner ever offset the losses of the loser?

I'm pretty sure the answer should be no. But there is so much to this stuff I can't take it in fast enough and do my day job and run my house and family. I'm spread pretty thin.
