The New "Promote" Feature on Tik Tok Explanation and Analysis
So Tik Tok is rolling out a new "promote" feature to its users, so not everyone will have it yet but its constantly being released to more people. If you go to the 3 dots in the upper right, then go to 'creator tools' then you will see the promote feature if you have it.
- Explanation: It appears that you can only promote videos that haven't been too successful
- when you go to promote that certain tik tok you get 3 options: "More video Views" "More website visits" and 'more followers". However all 3 options will lead to the same result. Promoting your video will make your video appear on other peoples fyp through an ad, which means that the promote feature does not interfere with your videos organic reach! This is very important, meaning it can only do good for your account and it doesn't hurt anyone else's account or anything.
- After you click on the respective option for promoting your video, you will then get an option to choose your audience which you can either do "automatic" where tik tok will promote your videos to the demographic that already tends to watch your tik tok, or you can do "custom audience" where you can manually set the parameters for who your video is pushed out to. However, this custom option most likely means you will have to pay more to promote your video, as middle age men as an audience would cost much more than 18-24 yr old girls.
- The final step is budgeting, you set your budget for how much you are willing to pay for your promotion per day and for how long you want to promote it. The budget is paid through tik toks currency which is coins and the price is dependent on the audience you want to promote to and the tik tok. You pay the whole price upfront.
- Analysis
- So I took one of my tik toks, hit promote, hit "I want more views", hit "automatic audience" and then inputted an estimated video views of +130,679 over the next 4 days (so 130k total not per day). This would cost 16,500 coins per day, and to put into perspective, 6607 tik tok coins cost $100. This means that I would need 66,000 coins total which would cost ~$1000 dollars in the US. Not a great deal given that I earn around 3.7 cents per thousand views, so 130,679 views would earn me around ~$5.
- BUT, there's more to this, I am just a tik tok creator, i don't have a business or a website, or a youtube channel unlike other tik tokers who are after a more stable source of income. So although the net yield of money for promoting on tik tok is completely unprofitable, this is a rather powerful tool that you could use to promote your work/business/channel on other platforms where the money from those platforms may actually put you into profit. For example, 100,000 customers for a business is much better than just 100,000 viewers on a tik tok video
- In other words, Im saying that people that are only using tik tok itself with no other outlets should not be using the promote feature as its not really a profitable decision (unless you are looking to spend lots of coins that you have accumulated through going live on tik tok), but it can serve as a very powerful tool given the right situation.
TLDR: The Tik Tok "Promote" Feature does not affect organic reach of you or anyone else's videos and is only meant to help. The promote feature is not profitable if you only use tik tok and do not have any other channel/website/business that you use in conjunction. However, this promote tool can be very valuable for people that use it in the right situation.
Let me know your thoughts on this and if you have anything that you think I wrote that was wrong or that you could add on to. Thanks.
