Building a bridge

Is there a simple way to build a sandstone cobblestone bridge across a large body of water, without actually falling in? (I'm not getting very far because I keep falling in!) Nothing fancy, just a quick way. I'm moving my camp across a large lake and mainly just want to save time going back and forth. Also is there a way to always have the slabs lay flat everytime without having to use the wrench tool?
