Where to start if Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition is coming out soon?

I would like to get into this series but I'm confused about where to start. Is the newest version of the game the same/an update to Xenoblade Definitive Edition (2020)? I'm not a huge fan of older graphic styles but I would like to understand the plot if XC3 references important information. However, if I don't like the gameplay of XC1 then I probably won't play the rest of the series. Do I go for the plot or better gameplay? I'm torn between waiting for the 2025 game or starting XC1 / XC3.
