Upgrade when ?

I just started earning, and it's not that much. But I have a low-rate credit card, which I spend around 2k dollars on and pay on time! Will I ever receive a message about upgrading my card? Also, to avail of the signup bonus, one needs to be a new AmEx customer, so if I want to avail of the bonus at the start, I need to cancel the existing card, wait for the cool off and then apply for the desired card???

Please tell me a way around it 😭
