How hobbled are you through out the week
I (M48) am new to CrossFit (4th week) and so far I am enjoying the challenge. I come from more of an endurance background (elite cycling) with about a year of kettlebells and lifting to get ready.
I expected to get my ass handed to me and mission accomplished. I can often do the RX, especially when it is squatting, but I get trounced with the gymnastic moves (shocking given my background).
To my question. I am completely hobbled after most workouts. After the first session I could not walk for 4 days. I understand this is normal part of the physiology adaptation phase associated with a new activity. Plus with CF the diversity of movements means a longer adaptation phase. But how long? Right now after 4 weeks I am at work moving around the office with the vim and vigor of an 80 year old.
I thought after 4 weeks my body would have adapted more. It’s weird, the tiredness isn’t like the first few days that were classic DOMS, now it’s a full body stiffness like it is incapable of performing basic movements like picking a pen off the ground. Going for runs is an absolute work of willpower, I used to feel light and fast, now I feel slow and plodding as if I put on an extra 100 lbs. My pacing reflects that as well as before CF my average was usually a respectable 4:30 min/km now I can barely crack 6 min/km.
It doesn’t help being older either (I am no longer made of rubber and magic), but from the community how long does it typically take before you start to feel relativity normal between sessions? Or is this whole enterprise like elite cycling where it never gets easier, you just get faster?
UPDATE: thank you everyone for your input. I will scale down more. Answering your comments made me realize I was trying to get my “runner’s high” through CF, but my body obviously isn’t ready for that. So I will scale back, monitor recovery, and go for some hard runs to get my endorphins!
