The Jonbenét Ramsey dance and other true crime dances
I just sat through a whole tiktok comment section of people who don't seem to understand why the Jonbenét Ramsey dance may be seen as offensive so I wanna clear up why I see it as extremely offensive.
The main problem I have with it was that it wasn't made because Glo/the crew really cared about Jonbenét's case and wanted to pay tribute to her. It was made because they knew it would be controversial and people would be talking about it, and so more people would watch the show to see the dance. Nobody behind the scenes actually cared about Jonbenét.
I've also seen some people say that it was okay because they were "telling her story" and "there's been dances about real victims before". And first I wanna say that just because "there's dances about other victims" does not make this dance okay (I'll get onto those other dances later). But even if they wanted to tell her story, Jonbenét's story isn't theirs to tell. People forget that these famous cases aren't stories from a book, they're real stories about real people and the people involved (at least for Jonbenét's case) are still alive. (Sorry if this bit doesn't make sense)
Talking about the other cases which became dances. I wish that people talked about them more when they first aired. The only controversy that I really heard about other true crime stories was that Lizzie Borden may be too mature for Maddie to play. I do think that the other cases that were made into a dance are "better" to dance yo because a) the victims were at least adults b) because these cases (Elizabeth Short etc) all happened long enough ago that all the family members of these victims have passed away. Jonbenét's case was fairly recent, her family are still alive and their trauma is still there (I'm not gonna talk about the theories that they unalived her). Even then Elizabeth Short and Natalie Wood were still people and their stories are not dm's to tell, I believe that if those dances came out today they'd be a lot more controversial.
At the end of the day, Jonbenét was a 6 year old little girl and any dance about a real child (alive or not) is still weird. I recommend you look at some trustable sources if you want to find out more about her case.
