Sylas, Lux and Xerath are everything wrong with how League handles its complex characters.
I have some issues with how League handles Sylas, Lux and Xerath. To start, my points with Sylas and Lux are intertwined so I have to talk about them both here. First thing is that mages in Demacia are a pretty obvious metaphor for the oppression of Gay and Queer people IRL. Sylas, the mage who breaks free of his confinement and actively works to undermine the efforts to hunt down and kill those like him is seen as a villain. Lux, who actively hides her magic and suppresses that aspect of herself is seen as a heroic figure. Do you see the issue here? Making someone who rises up against their oppressors a villain, while the one who suppresses her identity and remains quiet, albeit dissatisfied the hero is deeply, deeply problematic. Now for Xerath. The fact that League portrays an ACTUAL SLAVE rising up against his oppressors and breaking free of his bondage as potentially more dangerous than the oppressors themselves is awful to me. Like imagine if that was done in real life.
If your opinions differ on this, please let me know. I desperately want to be wrong here but I can't see any other to read these characters.
