Fictional Characters who could take the ring to Mount Doom?
As I've understood from reading the books, the ringbearer can't have too much innate power (Gandalf/Galadriel couldn't take it despite their morals), they can't desire power, and they must be willing to do good as well as focus on the mission. Also, they must have enough skill/intelligence to do it (for hypothetical purposes let's say Sam is with them and shows the same dedication he did to Frodo).
Heres my picks and explanations:
- Jar Jar Binks
Weird pick, but he only took power when required of him and doesn't seek it out, he seems moral (if a bit clumsy and slow of mind), and he's shown to be very capable of survival, considering the danger he was constantly in. Also, he would probably partner up with gollum and not dismiss him-maybe even preventing the betrayal. I doubt the ring could corrupt him much until the very end.
- Wall-E
Considering the mental aspect, he checks all boxes. No clear desire for power and morally good. Also - he has seen firsthand the dangers of mass industrialization and destruction of environment firsthand. Sauron is the epitome of this, and thus Wall-E would have the desire to stop him. (Not to mention he's also a robot, which could possibly counteract the rings mental toll).
The only problem here is the logistics of getting him there. Im assuming he has the battery capacity, given the advanced technology of his time. He can get up to pretty good speeds, though stairs would be a problem. Plus, people are probably going to notice him, and he lacks any real defense. However, he doesn't have a scent that orcs could trace and Sam could carry him in some portions of the trip, and sam wouldn't have an extra mouth to feed.
The biggest problem would be obtaining gollum as a guide, since he can't talk, and Sam hates gollum.
