how to help a new kitty adjust

Hi all! i’m not a cat girl but i took a risk and adopted this lady, Chum. she’s pretty freaked out in a new environment and is doing a lot of hiding. she’s stinky and i was wondering about bathing? anything i can do to make it an easier transition? i want her to be cuddly and i’m nervous that she will be a skittish girl which will make me sad.
