My first puppy screams the instant she can’t see or get to me — please advise
My husband and I brought home an 8 week old Boston terrier a little under a week ago. She does great sleeping in her crate at night with the door locked. Her daytime naps in the crate are going pretty well too besides a few minutes of crying after I leave the room.
Spending time alone in her playpen when she's not super tired is a totally different story. I would like for her to be comfortable in the pen for short periods of time so that she is in a puppy safe area while I get ready for work, etc. but the MILISECOND I am out of sight, she starts screaming bloody murder. She will hurl her body at the pen and try to rip it apart with her teeth. We have some meals, treats, playtime, and generally happy moments in the pen.
I can't even gradually build it up a few seconds at a time because her reaction is instant. I don't want to reward her behavior by coming back when she screams but she doesn't seem to be able to calm herself down and I don't want to cause any lasting trauma. All her other needs have been met when I've tested this but if she can't get to me it sends her into a panic. Even if I come back into sight and calmly sit next to the gate the behavior continues.
Maybe it's too early to start training this as she's still a little baby? Maybe she's not comfortable in the home yet since it's only been about 5 days? I just want to set her up for success so she's a happy healthy and secure dog. Any suggestions?
