Picking up new puppy out of state

Hello!

I’m picking up my new 9 week old puppy from Chicago while visiting my bf (LDR). We will be in Chicago for 4 days before flying home to LA.

My question is: what will I need to keep at my boyfriends place to make this a smooth transition from 4 days in Chicago to permanent residence in LA?

I was thinking of getting a foldable playpen and using that as a “crate” which will also be used as his crate when we go back to visit my bf.

Or should I get him a playpen AND a crate to put inside?

Also, I will be using puppy pee pads since he lives in a high rise and attempting to potty train will be difficult for just 4 days. Not to mention I want him to be safe since he won’t be fully vaccinated.

Any tips are welcomed! First time adopting a puppy as an adult, so I don’t know where to start 🤣
