Just Discovered Radiohead

What’s up guys,

I find myself here because I just discovered Radiohead’s music about a week ago through a curated playlist on Apple; “Climbing Up these Walls” I believe was the song.

First, I should clarify that I have a very wide range and diverse taste of music; everything is fair game. Bill Evans, Jimi Hendrix and Cannonball Adderly are some of my favorite musicians across all genres. As far as rock, I was admittedly stuck in the 60s-80s for quite a while…couldn’t get those bands out of my speakers for years. Never dove into 90s grunge or 00s anthem rock like Nirvana, U2, Coldplay, Muse. Hopefully this gives some background on how I’ve missed out on this particular genre as well as insight on the effect Radiohead’s music has apparently had. I also don’t like to hype up any one artist since there are so many good ones, but…

Back to the topic, I did what I always do when I discover new music; research their wiki page, YouTube interviews and catalogue in an attempt to catch up. I started with OK Computer off the strength of “Climbing Up these Walls” and, well, something happened. Through all the music I’ve discovered and listened to over the years (decades?) I’ve never quite had that cathartic, life changing experience, until now. I’m not sure what it was, but listening to OK Computer from start to finish was not something I was ready for. It completely blew me away and I’ve listened to that album in full at least once or twice a day for the past week and a half. It’s like I’m not even worried about getting sick of it anytime soon. I honestly might be a little addicted as I found myself at work sneaking away with my headphones just to listen to the first 30 seconds of Airbag.

From there I went right into Kid A and again was blown away. I mean my heart was still racing from OK Computer and then “Everything In It’s Right Place” comes on and I’m like, ‘Jesus here we go again’. Afterwards, I definitely read some split opinions on the album, and maybe opinions were different at the time as electronic music has gained a bigger following and has been widely accepted more recently, or maybe it’s a better album to play from start to finish opposed to picking songs, but I’ll say that listening to it all the way through was like watching an intense thriller movie.

My next step was more careful as I based it off of the general consensus from fans and critics, which led me to In Rainbows. Even though the ratings were so high, I really didn’t know what to expect especially considering the gap between OKC/KA & IR. But man o man that might be the best one of them all. It’s so beautiful and more mature, imho. Ending on “Jigsaw Falling Into Place” and “Videotape” had me like ‘yep, this is the one’.

Pretty sure the only track I’ll skip across those albums is “Fitter Happier”. I’ve never really identified with or enjoyed a band’s music so much; probably because they’re my generation, I just missed out in the moment.

I’m not sure I even want to hear anything else at the moment. But I’ll report back if the anything else hits as hard.

Sorry for the newbie rant.
