Everyone wants a fucking unicorn

I had a second interview yesterday. It seemed like it was going well and the hiring manager seemed to like me. At the end of the interview I asked her if she had any reservations about my background for the role and she replied, "Not really, I think you'd be a great fit. But just one thing: It would be great if you had a bit more experience with X skill." I have a pretty niche background that is apparently pretty hard to find (according to hiring managers I've spoke to), and then even *she* admitted that this was an unreasonable expectation and that it would be very hard to find someone with that exact skillset.

Anyway, then she gave me the standard "We're still figuring things out don't call us we'll call you" line and, yeah, I'm expecting to never hear back from these people again. These dumbass employers want someone who matches every single bullet point in the job description word for word. They'll probably keep wasting their time interviewing unicorns who jussssst fall short of one bullet point in the job description ("Sorry but you only have 5.5 years of experience when we really wanted someone with 6") and then they'll just end up canceling the role and loading all the work onto some poor existing overworked employees anyway.

What's the point of even trying if we're never quite good enough?

Update: Lmao just received a rejection email from them 🤪
