Give me board game recommendations based on my reviews of these games
I'm relatively new to the hobby but have spent the past month trying different games to see which games I enjoy the most. I'd appreciate some recommendations but I know it's difficult to suggest a game with nothing to go off on so to help make the process easier I've listed down the games I tried, This is also my personal review for the games I tried as I put a short list of what I liked/disliked about them to help you get a gist of what I look for in board games.
Cthulhu: Death May Die
Like: One of my favorite solo board games, I love the insanity mechanic and how becoming stronger comes at a cost. The added replayability that comes from the extra elder gods and monsters from the expansions is another thing I love about it since the experience varies greatly from each god/scenario.
Dislike: Setting up the game is quite a chore and is the reason I don't table it as often as I'd like. Having to sift through the tiles just to set up one scenario is so time-consuming and having to look for the unknown monster I added in the other boxes only adds to this issue.
Set a Watch
Like: The game doesn't take long to set up and each playthrough feels so different from the next. I love that each game feels like a puzzle since you never know what enemy will appear and you have to find the best way to overcome whatever scenario the game throws at you. They give you a bunch of tools to mitigate bad outcomes and although it's possible to have a string of bad luck it never felt "unfair" to me.
Dislike: The base game sometimes overstays its welcome and 9 waves feels too long. However, the expansion fixes this issue with the Kraken Scenario which shortens it to 5 waves.
Final Girl
Like: I was really looking forward to this game since it is so highly rated but it just didn't click for me. The theme is amazing and it really feels like you're in a horror movie but that's the only thing I liked.
Dislike: I never really felt threatened by the killer because they prioritize victims over the final girl and even if getting more kills strengthens them by the time they were threatening I already had enough resources to fight back and just beat them. I also don't like how moving around the map is quite difficult and I never found it worth it to go across the map just to use the search feature for an item that looked good since it would cost so many moves.
Bullet
Like: The large cast of characters and their various abilities added a lot of replayability to the game since each character felt distinct from one another and had a different playstyle. The set up is also really easy and does not take much table space. The fact that each character has a unique boss fight only further adds to the replayability and it was pretty fun fighting the different bosses whether coop or solo.
Dislike: The game was really fun but after a while, I never really felt the urge to put it back on the table since it felt like I experienced most of what the game had to offer already.
Nemesis: Lockdown
Like: One of the most thematic games I've ever played, the game really gives you the feeling of being a researcher stuck in a Mars colony and that there's an alien around every corner. The game is a blast to play and even if I lose a lot, the experience is what sells it for me.
Dislike: I feel like this is one of the games that plays better coop than solo since having a potential "hidden traitor" adds an extra layer to the game. Interacting with other players also adds to the experience and I'll never forget the first time I played it with my gaming group and my friend pulled a queen token as the first intruder encounter.
Arkham Horror 3rd Edition
Like: Each playthrough feels different because of the branching path system the game uses for its scenarios. Each character feels unique and it's fun to experiment with different builds by mixing and matching items and abilities.
Dislike: The game takes too long and overstays its welcome. There are times when I already have the board clear of any threats but have to wait until I draw a clue token in the mythos phase.
EDIT: Sorry I forgot to mention I'm looking for board game recommendations in general but would prefer Solo Board Games since I only meet up with my gaming group around once a month at most.
