I notice you didn’t mention maintenance. I wish I could share what is happening in my unit right now without identifying it, but I can’t. So I’ll just say that all the problems with lack of experience below the senior level applies to maintainers as well. Junior and even many mid grade NCOs don’t have enough experience to properly train and supervise their subordinates, and on top of that they are spread thin and overtasked. Worse, the younger WOs and RLOs don’t have enough experience to really understand the risk they are expected to assess and accept, and are not ready to let maintenance slow down as appropriate for the maintainer skill levels because it will cost them even more of their scant flight time. I had a frustrated company safety officer ask me today what controls can be put in place to mitigate the obvious risks of underexperienced maintainers, and then balked at anything that would reduce programmed flight hours.

I did mention that maintainers are being driven into the dirt, and beyond that I completely agree with you. I see the atmosphere in the crew shack every day and it closely parallels that of the Pilot office.

Agree with everything, but I question this correlation between low-hour pilots and accidents that keeps getting brought up here. I don’t have the data to know if this is true or not, but the stories I keep hearing about these accidents describe high-hour cockpits.

I realize now that I was sort of buying into the same 'experience gap' bullshit that I was railing against. My intent was to show that while it may be an explanation, it sure as fuck should not be an excuse.
